MAINOBJECTIVE
ThemainobjectiveoftheEMCDirectivesistheprotectionofthehealthandsafetyofpersons,andthustoprevent,asfaraspossible,theplacingonthemarketandputtingintoserviceofunsafeorotherwisenon-compliantproducts.
CONFORMITYMARKING
ConformitywiththeEMCDirectiveisindicatedwiththeCEMarking,whichisamandatorymarkingforproductsfallingwithinthescopeofthisDirective.CEstandsforConformitéEuropéenne,FrenchforEuropeanconformity.
WithouttheCEMarking,andthuswithoutcomplyingwiththeprovisionsoftheDirective,theproductmaynotbeplacedonthemarketorputintoserviceintheEuropeancountriesthatformtheEuropeanEconomicArea(theEEAconsistsofthefifteenmemberstatesoftheEUandNorway,IcelandandLiechtenstein.)
However,iftheproductmeetstheprovisionsoftheapplicableEuropeanDirectivesthesecountriesmaynotprohibit,restrictorimpedetheplacingonthemarketorputtingintoserviceoftheproduct.Thus,theCEMarkingcanberegardedastheproductstradepassportforEurope.
