两名居住在英国的年轻人约翰·伦德尔和安东尼·伯克,1969年在伦敦哈罗德百货公司看到一头被关在小笼子里的幼狮,很可怜它,便用250个英国旧金币买下,并给它取名“克里斯蒂安”。

Together,theywouldformthenucleusofanewpride-andthewholeprojectwouldbefundedbyaTVprogramme.
ChristianwasmarshalledintothebackofaLandRover,withstrawonthefloorandchicken-wireseparatinghimfromhisfriendsonthefrontseat.Itwasallratherconfusingforalionaccustomedtothebutter-softleatherofaBentley.Andhewashot.Anddusty.Andconfused.

Thefirstmeetingwasexplosive.Normallionprotocoldictatesthattheyoungermaleshouldbesubservienttothedominantmale.
ButChristian,moreschooledinSloanethanfelineetiquette,sashayedfearlesslytowardsBoy.
Fortunately,ChristianandBoy,thoughinadjacentcompounds,wereseparatedbyawirefence.Infuryattheperceivedslight,Boyflunghimselfagainstit-untilChristian,suddenlyrealisinghisfauxpas,slunkawaywithhisbellyclosetotheground.

Slowly,progresswasmade.ThebiggestthreattoChristianandBoywerethewildlionsthatstalkedthereserve,whichBoywasfightingtoestablishashisterritory.
Then,oneday,therewasatragedythatcausedthewholeprojecttobecalledintoquestion.AchefcalledStanleyhadleftthesafetyofthecompoundtolookforwildhoney.Hehadn'trealisedBoywasnearby,andwhenhesawhim,hetriedtoflee.
Runningawaywastheworstactionhecouldhavetaken.Adamson,hearingStanley'sscreams,camerunningandshotBoythroughtheheart-butitwastoolate.Stanleyhadbeenbittenthroughthejugularanddiedanhourlater.
Theoutcrythatfollowedalmostbroughtthelionprojecttoahalt,butAdamsonfoundsomesupportforhisworkamongotherconservationists,duginhisheelsandcarriedon.

Thiswasabittersweetmomentforallconcerned.RendallandAcedecidedtotraveltoKoraonelasttime,inthehopeofbeingabletosaygoodbye,thoughAdamsonwarnedthemthatitwouldalmostcertainlybeawastedmission.
"Christianhasn'tbeenhereforninemonths.Wehavenoreasontothinkhe'sdead-therehavebeennoreportsoflionspoachedorkilled.Buthemaynevercomeback,"hesaid.
Rendallrecalls,"Wesaid:'OK.Weappreciatethat,butwe'llcomeanywayandseeyou.'"
TheyflewtoNairobithentookasmallplanetothecampinKora,whereAdamsoncameouttomeetthem.
"Christianarrivedlastnight,"hesaidsimply."He'sherewithhislionessesandhiscubs.He'soutsidethecamponhisfavouriterock.He'swaitingforyou."
AdamsonandhiswifeJoyoftentalkedaboutthemysterious,apparentlytelepathiccommunicationskillsoflions-particularlybetweenlionsandmen.
BothbelievedthatlionswerepossessedofasixthsenseandGeorgewasconvincedthatascientificexplanationwouldonedaybefound.
Andhere,itseemed,wastheproof.
"Christianstaredatusinaveryintenseway,"saysRendall."IknewhisexpressionsandIcouldseehewasinterested.Wecalledhimandhestoodupandstartedtowalktowardsusveryslowly.

Thereunionpartywentonallnightandintothemorning.Leavinghisexhaustedcompanionstogototheirbeds,Christianreturnedtohispride.
"Wewatchedhimgobacktothetwolionesses,whowerenotatallhappywiththisman,smellingofnicotine,whiskyandhumans,"saysRendall.
"Hejustwallopedthetwoofthemwithhispaw,thencollapsed."
Andthatwasthelastanyoneeversawofhim.
Forthenext14years,GeorgeAdamsonremainedatKora,rehabilitatingseveralotherlionsandignoringwarningsfromtheauthorities,whodidnotconsideritsafeforhimtostay.
Then,in1989,hewasambushedandmurderedbybandits.
Hediedwithaguninhishandand,inaccordancewithhiswishes,wasburiedatKora.
Followinghisdeath,hissupportersformedtheGeorgeAdamsonWildlifePreservationTrust,whichnowdoesworkinKoraaswellasinTanzania,whereitisreintroducingtheendangeredblackrhinoandhuntingdog.
Thetrust'schiefaimiskeepaliveAdamson'sdreamofaplacewhereanimalscanroamfree-afittingepitaphnotjustforthegreatconservationistbutalsoforthelionwhooncelivedinChelsea。
