ABSTRACT
TheMEDETexperimenton-boardISSsinceFebruary2008,isanopportunitytofollowinrealtimethephenomenadegradationofalargesetofmaterialsused
normallyforspaceapplications(20differentmaterials).
Thethermo-opticalpropertiesstudiedbyourteamduringthemissionweremeasuredbyUVandIRspectrometers.
AnUVspectrapreliminarydataenabledtohighlightthetwodegradationphenomenaexpectedforasuchmissionnamely:yellowingofsomematerialsdueto
UVexposureandthedecreaseofthicknessesforotherslikepolymericfilmsduetoAOerosion.
1.INTRODUCTION
MEDETisamaterialexperimentonboardEuTEF/Columbus.ItisafruitfulcollaborationbetweenONERA,ESA,CNESandtheUniversityofSouthampton.Itcombinessevensub-experimentsdevotedtothecombinedmeasureoftheradiativespaceenvironmentinlowearthorbit(LEO)anditsassociatedeffectsonmaterials.ItallowsforrealtimecharacterizationofthelocalISSenvironmentandmaterialdegradationsuchasthermalcoatings,polymersforinflatablestructures....
ThespectrometerexperimentispartofMEDETandhasbeendesignedforsurveyingthedegradationwithtimeofseveraltypesofopticalwindows(includingsyntheticultra-pureSiO2andotherradiationstablematerials).
Theopticalspectraltransmissionofthesamplesaremeasuredbyasysteminvolvingquartzopticalfibres,twominiaturespectrometermodules(tocoverthesolar
spectrumfrom200to1000nm)andtwoilluminationsensors.Thematerialstobetestedareplacedonarotatingwheel,containing24aperturesandthesunis
usedasthelightsource,sothatmeasurementsareallowedonlywhenthelightdetectedbytheilluminationsensorsisina±40°acceptanceangle(seefigure1and
figure2).Anencodersystem,consistingofphotodiodes

Eachminiaturespectrometermodulesconsistsofagrating,opticsandaCCDdetector.Theseareallrigidlyhousedwithinthesamecase.Themoduleisbasedonastandardlaboratorydevice(ZeissMMS)whichhasbeenadaptedforspaceflightuse.However,inordertobeoperatedsafelyonMEDET,whichisanexternalpayload,theminiaturespectrometermodulesaremountedinapressurizedcylinder.Forredundancy,2setsofpressurizedcylinders(with2spectrometersineach)aremountedbehindthefilterwheel.Bothareoperatingsimultaneouslyallowingeachsampletobemeasuredtwiceateachwheelrotation.
